The Neuer Wall in Hamburg is home to several office buildings worth seeing. The East India House is one of them. Built in 1906-1907 by architect Ernst Friedheim (1864-1919), it welcomes visitors with a beautiful, tiled entrance area.

The magnificent building on Dammtorstrasse was built between 1908 and 1912 by architects Leon Frejtag (1862-1927) and Erich Elingius (1879-1948) and named after a movie theater. The building has been called Dammtorhaus since 1974.

The magnificent staircase is tiled and decorated. An elevator leads visitors to the top. Large window fronts provide light.

Im Eingang erwarten den Besucher Marmor und deckenhoch geflieste Wände. Das Treppenhaus und ein Lift führen nach oben. Durch eine Fensterfront im Hof wird jede Etage hell erleuchtet.

On Neuer Wall there is a Kontorhaus, the splendor of which is only revealed inside. The architects Leon Freytag and Erich Elingius created this beauty in 1910-1911. Apart from the business area, the exterior of the building is quite sober. The Grès-flammés reliefs, which were very popular at the time, decorate the window front. Marble and ceiling-high tiled walls await visitors at the entrance. The staircase and an elevator lead upstairs. Each floor is brightly lit by a window front in the courtyard.+

Kontorhaus Hamburg Dammtorstraße
The building conceals a gift of staircase art. In the building from 1882, a dreamlike spiral staircase winds its way upwards. The house was designed by architect Adolf Valentin August Heim (-) as a residential and commercial building. The building was extended in 2008 and the façade was refurbished in white. The architects were responsible https://tchobanvoss.de/ When the paint from 2008 was to be renewed in 2023, the owners almost realized that the original façade with numerous decorative elements was under the old layers of paint. The house was then restored to its original condition.

The Kontorhaus Südseehaus is situated in a prominent location between Spitaler Strasse and Mönckebergstrasse. The architect Carl Bensel (1878-1949) designed the building. (He was also involved in the Levantehaus and the Bugenhagenhaus.) The prestigious building was constructed between 1911 and 1912. The last occupant of the building was a large fashion retailer. The entrance is still preserved, but is not accessible. The name of the house comes from the Tahitian wife of a co-owner of the house, Eduard Harry Ringel.

Seit 2018 wurde das Haus aufwändig von Quest saniert und in 2022 wieder neu eröffnet. In seinem schmaleren Anbau erwartet den Besucher ein hübsches Treppenhaus in ungewöhnlicher Form. Da war wohl der fehlende Platz ein „Mit-Architekt“.

The Ballinhof – Ferdinandstraße extension
In 1901-1902, the building on Ballindamm was created by Georg Kallmorgen (1862-1924) and Werner Lundt (1859-1938). The extensions to Getrudenstraße and Ferdinandstraße completed the building in 1905 and 1921. Since 2018, the building has been elaborately renovated by Quest refurbished and reopened in 2022. In its narrower extension, a pretty staircase of unusual shape awaits the visitor. There, the lack of space was probably a „co-architect“.

Kontorhaus Weserburg Spaldingstraße

A striking, massive building stands at the corner of Spaldingstraße and Heidenkampsweg. The Kontorhaus Weserburg – today Kontor 218 (after the house number). From 1909-1910, Alfred Kellermann (-) and Otto Tauchnitz (1880-) built the Kontorhaus for A. E. Werbeck. The charm of the history is hardly preserved. In order to use the building, it was completely renovated and rebuilt.

The Tillmann house in Schauenburger Straße was built around 1843. Ludwig Tillmann was responsible for the second reconstruction after the Hamburg city fire in 1886 with Krumbhaar and Heubel. In 1920 to 1921 a new reconstruction took place. The reconstruction after the war in 1950 was carried out by architect Gerhard Langmaack. Original tiles are still laid in the entrance hall of the beautiful staircase.

Kontorhaus Steinhöft: Elbhof
Built in 1905 by the architect Walter Martens (1860-1937). Located on the edge of the harbor, it offers „elegant and distinguished interior decoration“. And, of course, a very beautiful staircase with a riveted steel staircase. In 1991, the architects Dinse, Feest, Zurl renovated the house and increased the building. (Unfortunately, my work on site was severely limited…).

Kontorhaus Poststraße
In 1906, the architect Ricardo Bahre (-) built the beautiful Kontorhaus (Barnbrockhaus) in the middle of Hamburg’s city center for the paper merchant Emil Barnbrock. He also designed the Heinehaus on the Alster. Brightly tiled walls with a sweeping staircase invite the visitor in. The renowned firm of Gerkan, Marg and Partners renovated the building in 1980 and modernized the rear wing. https://www.gmp.de/de/
