Für dein Unternehmer Rudolf Bartholomay erbaute Architekt Rudolf Klophaus (1885-1957) das Gebäude an der Steinstraße in 1938. Es fällt auch durch einen aufgesetzten Schmuckgiebel in der Altstädter Straße auf. Zur Zeit des Bus waren die Architekten dazu übergegangen, die Treppenhäuser platzsparender zu gestalten, um mehr Nutzfläche zu gewinnen. In der Steinstraße steht nah dem heutigen Finanzamt das Rodewaldthaus. In 1931 vom Architekten Emil Neupert (1878-1962) erbaut, steht es heute unter Denkmalschutz. Neupert war mitverantwortlich für die Jarrestadt, eine moderne Wohnsiedlung in Hamburg.

Karstadt-Zentrale Hamburg

Der Chefplaner Warenhäuser des Karstadt-Konzerns, Philipp Schaefer (1885-1952) war verantwortlich für den mächtigen Bau in der Steinstraße. Von 1921 bis 1924 entstand die Zentrale des Konzerns. Bis zum Umzug 1932 nach Berlin lenkte der Konzern hier seine Geschäfte. Bis 1936 diente der Bau als Messehaus.

Danach zog das Finanzamt Hamburg ein und ist bis heute in dem Haus ansässig. Seit März 1999 steht das Gebäude unter Denkmalsschutz. In den 1960er Jahren passte man die Treppengeländer in der Höhe an. Über den schönen Handläufen aus Holz setze die Behörde höhere Handläufe aus Metall, die mit Kunststoff abgedeckt wurden.

Karstadt Headquarters Hamburg
The chief planner of department stores for the Karstadt Group, Philipp Schaefer (1885-1952) was responsible for the mighty building on Steinstrasse. The group’s headquarters were built from 1921 to 1924. The Group conducted its business here until moving to Berlin in 1932. The building served as a trade fair center until 1936.

After that, the Hamburg tax office moved in and is still located in the building today. The building has been a listed building since March 1999. In the 1960s, they adjusted the height of the stair railings. Above the beautiful handrails made of wood, the authority put higher handrails made of metal, which were covered with plastic.
